How to check if a car seat fits your car

No spec sheet can promise a seat fits YOUR car — bench width, belt and LATCH placement, and seat contour all vary. Use specs to shortlist, then verify with this method.

The 5-step check

  1. Match the basics: your child's weight/height to the seat's limits, and rear- vs forward-facing.
  2. Check the seat's footprint vs your bench — especially width if you need 3 across, and depth for rear-facing legroom with the front seat where the driver needs it.
  3. Read both manuals: the car seat manual AND your vehicle owner's manual (car-seat section) — they list LATCH positions and any restrictions.
  4. Install and test: a correctly installed seat moves less than 1 inch side-to-side at the belt path.
  5. Get it checked: a free certified CPST inspection (find one via NHTSA) catches the ~half of installs that have an error.
🛟 Fit is decided by your seat manual + your vehicle manual. This page lists published specs to help you shortlist — it is not installation or safety advice, and it does not confirm a seat fits a specific car. Confirm install with the manuals, NHTSA, or a free certified car-seat technician (CPST) check.
